What is the mythology of vampires in the Charlaine Harris/Alan Ball universes?
There are several back stories of how vampires came to be in literature and movies that I know, but most authors now make up their own origins for their bloodsucking men and women.
The Fellowship of the Sun I believe go with the Judas myth.
After Judas betrayed Jesus, he hung himself, flinging the 30 pieces of silver on the ground around his hanging corpse. He was not, however, allowed to die, but was forced to walk the earth, sustaining his life by living on the blood of others. His weakness to silver was caused by the “blood money” he was paid to betray Christ. The one thing missing is the fear of the cross.
Still, Harris makes clear that is just what the FOS believes, not how they really came about.
Now, in some stories, a vampire can only be killed by the same kind of tree that Judas used to hang himself.
Anne Rice went even further back to create her vampires. She used Egyptian deities Akasha and Enkil. Now, from what I remember, Enkil was cut into pieces and when he was reassembled, his penis was not found, which is why no male vampire from the Rice universe can have sex.
Now that’s a big trade off: you can live forever, but you can never have sex again. Can you see Bill or Eric agreeing to that?
I now must admit I’ve never read any of the “Twilight” books (I have seen the movies) so I have no idea where those vampires come from either, or why they sparkle in the light.
I only know that “Vampire Diaries” vamps can walk in the sun if they own one of those rings.
As for Vlad the Impaler, aka Count Dracula, take your pick. I go with the story that he drank so much of the blood of those he killed it turned him in some fundamental way, making him both immortal and a creature of the night, hating crosses, garlic and stakes of wood and robbing him of his reflection in mirrors.
As for True Blood and the Southern Vampire Mysteries, I have no idea.
But, since those universes contain all kinds of other supernatural beings as well as us lesser mortals, they can come up with any story they like and it will be just fine.

I love you, TB writers, but I didn’t need to see what I assume is a mangled, bloody Russell Edgington wrapped in a large piece of cloth…ew guys! 😦 I guess that’s where they filmed the creepy hospital scene? Idk, I’m just guessing here!
It was, however, useful to get a bit more context to the speech leading up to the whole ‘angel of death’ thing, those words were so strange coming from Lafayette as he’s always loved Sook, but I can understand his anger. What set that little rant off? It looks like it took place at work rather than in private at home.
Jess messing with Steve Newlin? I’m curious as to what that’s about and what’s going to happen to him, I also want to know what Steve wants with Jason…revenge for sleeping with his wife? or does he actually want some help?
I wanna know why Alcide is crying…he’s wayyy too manly to cry, was it because he found out about Sook killing Debbie? Or was it because she used him? Personally I hope it’s because Sook used him, Debbie is nothing to cry over in all fairness….
Seeing Eric being trapped by a silver net and hearing him cry out in pain breaks my heart, poor baby 😦

I wanna know how Nora plays into this, how did she get to Bill and Eric? Why is she there? (other than being Eric’s sister of course) and why is she going against The Authority if she was one of them? Also, what or who caused the massive explosion? SO MANY QUESTIONS. oh and why is Eric kissing Nora. No darling, Sookie should be the only one you’re kissing, even if she is being difficult at the moment.
Hoyt covered in blood? I have a feeling he’s joined the FOTS and is now killing off vampires in revenge and hatred towards Jessica. Maybe it’s something else though…interesting to see such a light character take such a dark turn.
Ahhh Russell Edgington, you crazy and wonderfully wacky man. We all know though you don’t wanna gorge on human blood, it’s Fae blood your after 😉 I’m curious about what goes down in NO. they looked like they were having fun filming there.

I like Jason. Ever since Season 1. He’s a chick magnet, a pretty but dumb boy (an awful lot like JB DuRone from the books) and a very awkward hero.
I remember the moment I started cheering for Jason; it was when he pegged Steve Newlin between the eyes with a paintball, signaling an end to the FOS standoff in Dallas. I stood up from my chair and yelled “Yes!” when he did that. I almost missed his double tap with the comment, “I reckon I’ve already been to heaven, and it was inside your wife.”
The next time I literally cheered for Jason was when he stood atop the pickup outside of Merlottes and proclaimed himself “The God Who Comes”. The whole scenario of Jason and Andy on a mission to save BonTemps reminded me of Shanghai Knights, except there was no Jackie Chan between them. It was all Owen Wilson, times two.
But the biggest moment of Jason as the hero was when he popped Franklin Mott’s melon to save Tara Thornton. I was SO glad Jason did that; Mott always made my skin crawl and I was ecstatic to have that particular story line end. Thank you Jason!
His Tarzan attack on Felton should be in there but… Jason is no Tarzan. He’s more George of the Jungle. And Ape ain’t around to supplement Jason’s critical thinking. Which probably explains a lot about the Crystal Norris situation…
And the women! Oh, the women of Jason Stackhouse! Dawn Green, Amy Burley, Sarah Newlin… plus, he could have Tara if he’d been smart enough to realize what was in front of him. Jason gives hope to all of us non-supe guys out there; normal human guys CAN attract beautiful women in Bon Temps.
All of which brings me to this; I don’t remember Jason in the books having ANY hero moments, much less several. Why is Jason so heroic on True Blood? Did Alan Ball or the other writers watch “Jason and the Argonauts” as his character was being written? After all, we took a deep dive into Greek mythology with the maenad and Dionysus. Resurrecting the myth of Jason into the show isn’t that far of a stretch.
Or, maybe they stole the whole idea from “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou” (retelling of Odysseus). Yeah, now that i think about it, that makes a lot more sense;
Rural setting? Check
Bumbling, backwoods hicks? Check
Ridicules the South? You betcha
Tragic heroes? A plenty
Oh well – here’s to the modern Greek revival, wrapped up in a vamp love story and a were-panther gang bang.

TVFanatic– It doesn’t look like humans and vampire will be getting along very well on True Blood Season 5.
I see Sam is being held by Marcus’ mom (Dale Dickey) and her crew, will he be able to shift into something that can more easily escape?
See the brick background in this cap (all caps from B at Skarsgardfans, She had these up within 10 minutes of the trailer being shown like a machine!), well look at this cap of Newlin to see that he is there at some point too. Is he going to be used as a PR rep for them, what better promotion for vamps than the FOS lead joining up? He is wearing his little flag pin, instead of the FOS insignia pin.
