Starting in Season 3 True Blood began to shift its focus. It became less about the waitress from Bon Temps and more about the vampires in her life, but especially Bill. While personally I don’t mind this shift, one of the undeniable victims of the shift has been Sookie herself. She spent much of Season 3 and Season 4 looking for them/trying to save them/generally focused them and having little of any storyline that was uniquely hers. So when they announced that Sookie wouldn’t get back together with them for at least a period time in Season 5 (probably lengthened by Anna’s pregnancy) I was happy: the writers would finally have a chance to give us something new for her and reinvigorate the character. Now that the season’s come to end though, I’ll admit it: I missed Sookie with the vampires. She had the must spunk, the most attitude, the most Sookie-ish behavior when she was around them.
This is another instance of where the writer just hasn’t done the character justice. I can’t say that I was a fan of Sookie at the beginning of the season, but there her behavior was justifiable as was her emotional state. Once the aftermath of Debbie Pelt was neatly swept under the rug however, things began to fall apart and by the time she’d lead the vampires through the factory to find Russell that was pretty much the end of where she was interesting.
As with Jason, this whole plot about Warlow just not good or entertaining. She had some good scenes here and there – like the chats with Jason, she had some scenes stolen – Lafayette channeling Gran and a lot of scenes that made you stare at the screen with an expression of WTF on your face, like the meeting with the fairy elder. To be fair, the fairy elder stuff was exacerbated by the fact that director/cinematographer did a really distracting job of trying to hide Anna’s pregnancy.
It is clear by now that the whole theme of “who is Warlow?” is going to play a large part in Season 6. At this point, I just hope she doesn’t stay away from the vampires because she needs them as much as the audience enjoys watching them.
Best Moment – Sookie taking the vampires through the factory.
She was still buzzed and she was lecturing Eric and Bill like they were a couple of stupid teenagers who’d never watched a horror film before. Great scene and a reminder of just why she really shouldn’t be kept from the vampires, even if we sometimes wish she would be.
Worst Moment – The whole way the Debbie Pelt situation was handled
There’s no question that the Debbie situation had to be handled, but it ultimately came across that the writers didn’t really want to commit to it and so swept it under the wrong with a few lies from Alcide and some convenient glamouring from Jessica. If they wanted to make it go away, why not just claim self-defense? Given that Tara was shot and killed, you’d have a pretty solid case for it and it’d felt less forced. But if they went that route you couldn’t have had Alcide trying to take advantage of drunk Sookie, could you?
First Debbie, now Rikki. When will Alcide get a fucking break?!? Did the writers not think we’d notice or care that both of his lady loves have overdosed on V?
Well I care. Alcide had a good thing going with this she-wolf Rikki, not to mention the sex was rough and hot! Raawwwrrrr… 😉 Then the writers had to go mess it up within the last few minutes of the finale. Son of a bitch! This is only going send Alcide back into the arms of Sookie and with Bilith ressurrected and Eric thinking Godric knows what, she may not be able to stop herself this time.
Sookie has already been penned the “supernatural slut,” which is highly unfair considering her brother Jason is Bon Temps Town Gigalo. Having two beaus that just happen to be vampires, does not make you a trollup, it means you have a healthy love life. Although, if Alcide and Sookie were to hookup, it might snap Jason out of his psycho babble and visions of parents.
I hope this is the last we hear of V because honestly, that rodeo is getting old. Rikki will snap out of it so she and Alcide can build a life together. Or Alcide should just avoid all names that have an “ie” sound to them Oops, that means Sookie!
One scene in particular that caught my eye was in the last episode of season 4. Sookie is in the kitchen and she drops her spoon. It’s a superstition that If you drop a spoon, a woman will come to visit you. Sookie has a flashback of Gran and is startled when Tara walks in. I’m not sure if anyone but me realized the significance of the spoon. I knew at that moment she would later be visited by a female (Debbie) and it wasn’t going to turn out good
I love you, TB writers, but I didn’t need to see what I assume is a mangled, bloody Russell Edgington wrapped in a large piece of cloth…ew guys! 😦 I guess that’s where they filmed the creepy hospital scene? Idk, I’m just guessing here!
It was, however, useful to get a bit more context to the speech leading up to the whole ‘angel of death’ thing, those words were so strange coming from Lafayette as he’s always loved Sook, but I can understand his anger. What set that little rant off? It looks like it took place at work rather than in private at home.
Jess messing with Steve Newlin? I’m curious as to what that’s about and what’s going to happen to him, I also want to know what Steve wants with Jason…revenge for sleeping with his wife? or does he actually want some help?
I wanna know why Alcide is crying…he’s wayyy too manly to cry, was it because he found out about Sook killing Debbie? Or was it because she used him? Personally I hope it’s because Sook used him, Debbie is nothing to cry over in all fairness….
Seeing Eric being trapped by a silver net and hearing him cry out in pain breaks my heart, poor baby 😦
Chris Meloni – let me love you<33 he’s even more beautiful covered in blood after staking someone.
I wanna know how Nora plays into this, how did she get to Bill and Eric? Why is she there? (other than being Eric’s sister of course) and why is she going against The Authority if she was one of them? Also, what or who caused the massive explosion? SO MANY QUESTIONS. oh and why is Eric kissing Nora. No darling, Sookie should be the only one you’re kissing, even if she is being difficult at the moment.
Hoyt covered in blood? I have a feeling he’s joined the FOTS and is now killing off vampires in revenge and hatred towards Jessica. Maybe it’s something else though…interesting to see such a light character take such a dark turn.
Ahhh Russell Edgington, you crazy and wonderfully wacky man. We all know though you don’t wanna gorge on human blood, it’s Fae blood your after 😉 I’m curious about what goes down in NO. they looked like they were having fun filming there.
Oh. FAVOURITE QUOTE SO FAR?
‘A three thousand year old vampire wants to suck my blood. Must be Thursday!’
whoever wrote that into the script…
I was crying with laughter for a good ten minutes. Ohhh I love you<333
What happens to the makeup female shifters wear? Or their nail polish? Or their hairdoo?
I can’t help but picture Debbie Pelt in wolf form, complete with pink nails, pink lipstick, base, rogue and mascara. Or Luna as a pretty mare with a powdered nose. I seem to remember Daphne shift from a deer into a perfectly made up, coiffed suitor for Sam. Must all be part of the magic…
Along the same lines, when Sam shifts into a pretty bunny, where does his hair gel go?
Another random thought; Bon Temps is an entrepreneurial gold mine! I would try my hand at a few different things to see what would make a go of it;
– All night bank with trust services, catering to wealthy Vamp clients
– All night shoe cobbler; moving at Vamp-speed has to be hell on soles.
– Discreet clothes delivery and taxi service for shifters caught naked and far from home
– Rapid clean up and repair service for supe activity cover up
– Waitress Temp Agency for the perpetually understaffed Merlotte’s
At least one of those should work!
Final random thought; if Andy Bellefleur came in the woods and no one was around to hear it, could he still get a fae pregnant? (I’m hoping Queen Mab weighs in on this one)
That article about bodies piling up in TV series started me thinking. There have been a lot of deaths in Bon Temps in the last four seasons. Now before we start debating Tara’s fate, let’s look at some of the other bodies True Blood has buried…or not.
Some of the characters deserved to die. Mary Ann, in spite of her killer decorating sense. Nan because there’s only room for one snarky blonde on True Blood. Marnie, for ruining my face. Sophie Anne, Debbie Pelt and Marcus Bozeman for selfish stupidity.
Others were largely forgettable. The idiot Godric strangled for trying to rape Sookie in Dallas. Most of the males from Hot Shot. Every girl Jason dated, and I use that term very loosely, in Season 1. That idiot witch that tried to get between Eric and Marnie at the end of Season 4, oh, and the gay storm troopers who never had names anyway. Those three idiot vampires and the trailer trash, not they weren’t the same people, in Season 1. Whoever was in the Dallas nest when the FOTS fool blew himself to bits. Anyway, you get my point. Lots of bodies, not many names.
By far the shortest list is that of those characters who had to die but you really wish had not. Sookie’s Gran is at the top of that list. So is Godric, of course. Then the list gets…provocative. There are several characters I could wish were still around and the names might surprise you. Rene, mostly because he was human and could have been arrested, leaving the plot open for his return at a later date (hello, can anyone say Russell???). The Magister. As painful as that season was, I rather admired his sadistic nature. Eddie was a worthless vampire, but assuming he was a competent accountant he could be useful. Lorena just because she made Bill’s existence miserable. And Tommy because at least he made Bon Temps interesting.
Hm. That’s not such a short list after all. I must be mellowing in the off-season. Don’t worry though, sentimentality is just like cement and I’m going to wash it righ out of my hair before True Blood Season 5.Because nothing stays buried in True Blood…even when you want it to. -smirks-
‘Dead as a Doornail’ is the fifth book in Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Series and it’s quite an exciting book too. The book concentrates on Sookie wanting a bit more of a quiet life. After all, so far, Sookie has had a friend murder her grandmother, fallen in love and been betrayed, been raped, slept with two vampires, been blown up, discovered that not only are vampires real, but werewolves, shapeshifters and witches too, had her brother attacked by werepanthers (its only at the beginning of this book that we find out he will shift at a new moon unlike the TV series).
I suppose after all that, I’d want a quieter life too.
However, this is so not on the cards for our Sookie, no she has more hassle and crap to put up with. Makes you wonder why she does it eh?
‘Dead as a Doornail’ begins with were-animals in the area being shot at. Obviously, this includes Sookie cause she hangs about with a lot of them.
There is a pack master challenge in Shreveport and the very wonderful Alcide asks Sookie for help. He needs her there to listen to people’s thoughts and make sure no one will cheat, cause Jackson Herveaux is Alcide’s dad and he’s in the running.
Sookie gets kind of blackmailed into doing it cause he’s worked out that there is a strong possibility that Sookie has something to do with Debbie Pelt’s disappearing. Nice work there Alcide, gone from good guy to instant scum. However, the master of ceremonies is a were tiger called Quinn….. Hmmmm.
Sam, on the other hand has had a sly snog with Sookie, who is now convinced that vampires are bad news and are just into using her, which is quite ironic considering that as Sam has been shot he asks her to get Eric to give him a relief member of bar staff…..
Great, used by Sam, used by Alcide.
After being Franklin Mott’s bit of fluff in book 3, Tara has been passed off by him to another vamp called Mickey who is not really emotionally stable. She needs help to get away from him.
So, yes, you’ve guessed it, Sookie to the rescue again, she bargains with Eric for his help. In return, Eric asks to be told what happened when he lost his memory in book 4. Sookie does this, in what is probably one of the best bits of the book, next to Eric laughing at ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ on television.
We all know that True Blood is loosely based on the SVM, so today Day 3 I’ll give you a quick run down on book 5, then tomorrow, what story lines I think will be used and how some of the other characters may develop in Season 5.
Day One: Favorite Female Character from Season Four
I know, I know. I can hear your angry screams and see you shaking your fists. But unfortunately, my last fuck to give just went on vacation so it sucks to be you. I loved Debbie in Season Four. She was trying so hard to get clean and stay clean. And okay, so she technically attempted to murder Sookie in cold blood. Can you really blame her? After fighting to be sober, she lost the one man she was doing it for. That would make anyone go a bit cray-cray. Maybe not enough to break into a house with a loaded gun, but hey, I can sympathize with her. She’s badass, she’s crazy, she’s a bitch. And that’s why she won this spot on my countdown this year.
